To ensure a smooth rollout and trouble-free user experience for teachers, students and parents using the NTN Gradebook plugin, there are some step up steps that need to be completed in your Canvas instance. Below is a list of steps that should be completed before attempting to add the Gradebook plugin. Once completed, let NTN know via the directions in step 7 that you are ready to move ahead.
Create / Designate Sub-Account(s)
The NTN gradebook plugin becomes enabled for all courses in a sub-account (school). Identify which sub-accounts (schools) in your Canvas instance will be using the NTN Gradebook. If only some of your teachers or courses will be using the NTN Gradebook, a separate sub-account must be designated or created to hold those courses.
Create A Support Account
In order for NTN to troubleshoot any issues that may arise, we ask that an additional administrator account be created that provides access to the targeted sub-account(s) only. Without a support account, resolving issues make take significantly longer. See How do I add an admin to an account? for more information.
Account Name: NTNGradebookSupport
Account Email Email: firstname.lastname@example.org
Add this account as an administrator to the sub-accounts using the NTN Gradebook
Create An API Account
In order a for the plugin to have permission to interact with Canvas, it needs an account that has administrative permissions in your root account. This account will be used to authenticate with your Canvas instance in order to perform it's key functions.
Account Name: NTNGradebookAPI
Account Email: email@example.com
Add this account as an administrator to the root account (account ID 1).
Create An API Access Token
In addition to have administrator permissions, the NTN Gradebook requires an API Access Token be generated for the NTNGradebookAPI account created in step 3. To generate an a new token:
1. Sign in (or masquerade) as the new user.
2. Select the Account tool in left menu bar and click Settings
3. Scroll down to Approved Integrations section
4. click "New Access Token". See this article for detailed instructions.
5. Copy and save the token string. You will need to send it to us in the last step.
Adjust Sub-Account Feature Settings
The NTN Gradebook takes advantage of two Canvas features that need to enabled. In the target sub-account(s) that will be using the NTN Gradebook, adjust the feature settings by setting:
Setting New Gradebook feature to "On"
Setting Quizes.next feature to "On"
Note: If the option to turn these features on is not available in the sub-account, you may need to "Allow" these same settings in your root account in order to turn them on in the sub-account. Click Here for more detailed instructions.
Notify NTN That You Are Ready
When you have completed steps 1-5, send an email to firstname.lastname@example.org letting us know your ready for the plugin to be installed. Required information:
1. The URL for your Canvas instance.
2. The name of the sub-account(s) that you want the gradebook plugin installed.
3. Names and emails of the individuals that will be supporting the gradebook on campus.
