Tip #1 - Use Grading Periods
Use the grading periods feature to organize your course into semesters, quarters or other periods of time as chosen by your district. Your Canvas Administrator can configure grading periods in your domain. To learn more about grading periods in Canvas, see How do I use grading periods in a course? from the Canvas Help Community.

Tip #2 - Use Modules for Projects
Creating a module, with text headers with indents, helps keep your course content organized, as well as making it easy to locate for students. A well organized module will allow users to easily see how course content is related to different elements of a project. To learn more about how to format the module page, see How do I use the module index page? from the Canvas Help Community.
Any assignments created through the NTN Gradebook will also need to be added to the module. To learn how to do this, see How do I add content course content as a module item.

Tip #3 - Use the Publish Feature
Assignments created in Canvas using the NTN Gradebook are unpublished by default. Once content is published, all students will be able to view it in the course. Content can be published or unpublished as needed. However, once students have submitted work on an assignment, it cannot be unpublished. To learn how to publish content, see How do I publish or unpublish an assignment? from the Canvas Help Community.

Tip #4 - Set Availability for Assignments
Using the availability settings feature in Canvas allows an instructor to schedule when students can interact with a published assignment. For example, this feature is useful when a teacher wants students to see the directions to an assignment but not submit the assignment at that time. To learn more about using this feature in your course, see Making assignments available to students? from the Canvas Help Community.

Tip #5 - Order Modules
Because Modules can become pretty dense with all the elements of a long project, it is important to keep the most current project at the top of the module list to mitigate course navigation confusion. To learn how to reorder modules in canvas, see How do I move or reorder a module? from the Canvas Help Community.

The NTN Gradebook is constantly being improved based on the feedback from users and we strive to keep our documentation up to date. If this document doesn’t match what you are seeing currently, please let us know.
