The processes described in this document are being explored as a way to implement peer assessments within Canvas. We don't yet know enough to say this is a "best practice". We will continue to update this document as we learn more. If you have found a different solution that works for you, we'd love to hear about it.
The steps outlined below will produce a peer assessment form aligned to the NTN high school collaboration rubric that can be assigned to an entire class. Each student will complete the form multiple times during a peer assessment, one form submission will be completed for each person they are evaluating.
There are many ways to customize a form, depending on the goals and outcome of the peer assessment. To learn more about what to consider when creating a peer assessment, please see What should I consider when creating a student peer assessment?.
Step 1: Make a Copy of the NTN Collaboration Rubric Google Form
Click on this link to access the NTN High School Collaboration Google Form template. The link will prompt you to create a copy of the form and will save it in your Google Drive

Step 2: Format the form
You will need the names of students from the class in a spreadsheet column prior to following the directions outlined below. By formatting the form this way, it will allow students to easily select peers when completing the form and help with the sorting process to allow teachers to interpret the results after students complete the peer assessment.
- Rename the form to make it easier to find in your Google Drive
- Title your copy of the form template appropriately and provide any directions for the students in the form description field

- Locate your class roster spreadsheet. Ensure the names are formatted as they should appear in the dropdown list in the Peer Assessment form. Then highlight the student names and copy them onto the clipboard (Ctrl+C for PC users and ⌘+C for Mac users).

- Click on the “Group Member You are Evaluating” question on your Google Form.
- Highlight the 1st answer choice for the question and paste the class roster names. Google will make each student an answer choice for the question.

- Click on the indicators not being used in this assessment. Then click on the trash can icon at the bottom of the question window to remove it from the form.

- If students will be required to leave a comment, click on the comment question. Then click on the “Required” toggle at the bottom of the question box.

Step 3: Preview the form
To preview how the form will look for students, click on the eyeball icon in the upper right of the Google Form editor. A new tab will open with the user view of the form.

Now that the form is ready for students to use, please see How do I Embed a Google Form in Canvas for a peer assessment? to learn how to assign this to students in Canvas.
After students have completed the peer assessment, please see How do I assess students using a Google Form peer assessment? to learn how to process the assessment data.
The NTN Gradebook is constantly being improved based on the feedback from users and we strive to keep our documentation up to date. If this document doesn’t match what you are seeing currently, please let us know.
